Creating a classic and timeless wardrobe is all about having the right foundation pieces. From the classic white shirt, to timeless dresses – selecting classic pieces are key to creating a timeless wardrobe. Now being in my thirties, I realize the importance of purchasing clothes that can last longer than a single season — but which styles should you invest in?
The Ultimate LBD
At the top of anyone’s list should be the classic LBD (little black dress). Flattering in colour and versatile in design, the perfect LBD can make anyone feel like a runway model. And in the words of fashion designer, Karl Lagerfeld himself: “One is never over-dressed or under-dressed in a little black dress”.
How to style
For a statement-making outfit to wow the crowds at a special occasion, wear a figure-hugging LBD and accessorize with some statement jewellery and killer heels. Having a laid-back day with friends? Team a black skater dress with cute pumps and a faded denim jacket to get the perfect balance of chic and grunge.
The Perfect Pair of Jeans
No woman’s wardrobe would be complete without a decent pair of dark-wash jeans. Easy to pull on in a hurry and simple to spruce up for a night out with the girls; slim, skinny and straight leg jeans are versatility personified.
How to style
Team up a straight leg style with sneakers and a graphic tee to rock a casual look or prepare yourself for a night out by teaming skinny dark jeans with a white satin shirt tucked in, clutch bag and stiletto heels. Remember; there are no rules to which jeans fit a certain shape – so try out a few and see which you like best. I personally like to wear a higher waist with a straight leg.
The Classic White Shirt
Originally a staple in men’s fashion, the white shirt has been tweaked into various styles for women, making it every woman’s secret weapon in their workwear wardrobe. From boxy styles to tailored fits, the iconic ladies’ dress shirt has carried us effortlessly from work to play for decades.
How to style
Go for a neutral colour and fitted cut to wear tucked in with some wide trousers or midi skirt for at the office. Or if you’re looking to take your shirt out of the office and into the weekend, wear a satin shirt tied at the front with some high-waisted dark jeans.
Leather Jacket
Leather jackets are the perfect addition to a simple outfit. Contemporary and retro depending on your choice of design, leather jackets are timelessly stylish and have been an iconic staple to women’s wardrobes for years.
How to style
Biker leather jackets look amazing with skinny jeans and a plain tee or blouse. The cropped design perfectly shows off high-waisted trousers and belts, or why not style it with a cute checked or pretty floral midi skirt for an unexpected twist?
The Classic White Tee
Not to be confused with the white shirt, the white tee is also another wardrobe staple for a timeless wardrobe. This is where paying slightly more can really pay off. I have a dozen different white tees and the best ones have always been the ones where I paid a little bit extra. Whilst it can be difficult to part with cash for a plain white tee, you get what you paid for. More expensive, means better quality so the longer it will last through washes and wears.
How to style
Wear yours with mom jeans and sneakers for a relaxed weekend look. You can also team it up with a blazer and culottes for a semi-casual look at the office.
Boots
I’ve been growing my personal collection of boots for several years now! My favourites are usually chelsea or ankle with a block. We’re lucky to have a huge variety of boot length, heel heights and fabric patterns at our fingertips. Ranging from ankle to over-the-knee, boots can carry us from work to home and season to season.
How to style
Pull on a seductive pair of over-the-knee suede boots with a pair of super-skinny jeans and a boho blouse for a unique silhouette. Or why not go for casual with a pair of brown ankle boots? Stiletto boots look incredible with midi dresses on a night out, while buckle boots with a chunky block heel give you the perfect lift when you team them with tights, skater skirts and denim jackets.
Neutral Pumps
Pumps are perfect for every occasion. Comfy, cute and chic in one. They’re just as good as a base to a jeans-and-tee combo as they are to a skater dress and denim jacket outfit. If you’re not a fan of heels but want the perfect finish to your look, pumps are your best bet.
How to style
Wear them with skinny jeans, a-line skirts, drop-waist dresses, dungarees, denim shorts, and anything else you want!
