The Best Destinations for Winter Sun

Heraklion, Crete

Having been a Londoner all my life, I can vouch that there’s much to love about the UK, but let’s be honest: the weather is not one of them! The autumn and winter months can drag on a little bit longer than we’d all like. But why do most people head on holiday during the summer? Winter is when we all need it the most! So I wanted to take a look at some of the best destinations for Winter sun.

The Migration South

There’s a reason that people in the northern part of the states make the annual migration south: the weather is finnnneeeee. Take a trip to Florida, and you’ll be stepping back into the highlights of the summer season. Evenings spent on the beach, exploring the great outdoors, and topping up the tan. Of course, there’s much more for you to do than simply soak up the rays: there’s also the matter of Disneyland and all the other family-friendly attractions that make the state one of the world’s best holiday destinations.

The Land Down Under

Australia Beach

If you’ve never been to Australia before, then you should know that December and January are the best times to go. Why? Because that’s when it’s summer in the land down under, and freezing in England (not that Australia winters are that bad either)! Definitely one of the best destinations for Winter sun. Check out some cheap flights to Sydney, where you’ll be able to visit one of the world’s best cities before setting off to explore all that the country has to offer. This is actually a destination that’s currently on the top of my travel bucket list! I have family and friends that have just moved over there and am constantly envious of their gorgeous sunny travel photos. So who knows, this may be the destination for my next vacay!

Sydney Opera House

To Africa

A trip to South Africa might not be the first destination you think of when you’re planning a winter getaway, but hear me out. The weather is fantastic, there’s plenty of attractions, it’s beautiful, there’s a stellar wine region, and it’s only a two hour time difference from home, so no jet lag! I’ve always dreamed about going on safari, so this destination is a definite bucket list item for me. If you’ve never been to Cape Town and beyond before, then this upcoming winter might be a perfect time, especially if temperatures in the UK are as cold as expected.

A New World

Or, you could treat your post-Christmas blues by hitting one of the world’s most forward-thinking cities, Dubai. It’s a land that’s unlike anywhere else, and rest assured you’ll be able to do anything and everything when you’re there. The shopping is incredible and the beaches (although man-made) are gorgeous! I also recommend taking a short trip over to Abu Dhabi to visit the stunning Sheikh Zayed Mosque.

But more than that, you’ll also benefit from the region’s year-round warm weather. And there’s plenty of expats there to keep you company, too! In fact my cousin lived out there for over two years and loved it.

Hitting the Beach

Palawan beach

But if you’re anything like me, and all you want is the sun and a beach, then head to Cancun or the Philippines. You’ll find they both fit the bill for what you’re looking for. Of course I’m biased as my family originates from the Philippines, but I’ve also been to Cancun and loved it!

Yes, Cancun has wonderful beaches, but there is also a lot of history and culture there. I recommend heading out to Chichén Itzá to explore the Mayan ruins. And don’t forget to stop by Cenote Ik Kil for a swim in the beautiful underground cave surroundings. This is actually where they hosted the Red Bull Diving competition a few years back.

Have I inspired your wanderlust yet? Where will you be jetting off to this winter? Let me know in the comments below.

You’ve definitely inspired my wanderlust but that doesn’t take much! I like to head to the US in the winter – so much to see and do at this time of year

Florida would be my first choice as the kids are campaigning daily to go to Universal. Never fancied Australia – those spiders!

As I read this I’m looking out of the window at a very grey and wet Manchester. My feet are cold and I’m fairly sure it isn’t even going to get properly light today. It’s thoroughly miserable.
The idea of some winter sun is super appealing – being able to lounge on the beach and feel the warmth on my skin? Yes please!

I love that you’ve included Chichén Itzá, the Mayan ruins and Cenote Ik Kil in your write-up! I went there this summer, and actually dived in the cenote – so proud that I can claim I’ve dived there! Haha x

It’s beautiful there isn’t it?! I can’t wait to go back. I went a few years ago and didn’t have a good camera then so will need to go back just to take pics lol.

If I’m totally honest, I’m not sure how I feel about Winter Sun! Is that weird? I love spending Winter & Christmas here! Saying that though, one of my old friends used to live in Dubai and spoke about how beautiful it is, I’ve always wanted to visit!

The land down under may be sunny but’s it full of monsters. Not sure about the level of monsters in Cancun but it’s supposed to be lovely.
